ABOUT 15 years ago, as a teacher and local ice hockey coach, I was asked by the Parent Teacher Association to run an indoor floor hockey club at school. As a 2nd grade teacher, and Varsity Hockey coach for the district at the time, I was thrilled! Unfortunately, the school principal could not approve the program due to a concern that hockey sticks would damage the newly renovated gymnasium floor. Thinking quickly, I did an experiment with my high school ice hockey team…I asked my players to swap their skates for sneakers, and meet me at the elementary school school gymnasium for an indoor floor hockey practice rather than at the rink. It was there that I then taped a SWEAT SOCK over the blade of each player's stick, as we attempted a game of indoor floor hockey. At the conclusion of the game, there was not a scratch on the floor, and not a single injury! And so, in 2006, SOCKEY was born: Combining the words (and concept) of SOCK and HOCKEY! I am currently still teaching at the elementary level while coaching Varsity Ice Hockey, and proud to have continued the Sockey Hockey program in schools across the East Coast.
